Complete Guide to Selling Coins in Sydney

Gold and silver coins are some of the simplest items to sell, because their value comes almost entirely from the metal they contain. Here’s how coins are valued, what to bring, and how to get a fair price in Sydney.

How gold and silver coins are valued

Every coin is valued on three things:

  • Weight. Coins are weighed on trade-approved scales, verified under the National Instrument Test Procedures (NITP) of the National Measurement Act 1960.
  • Purity. Most gold coins are 99.99% or 91.67% gold, and most silver coins are 99.9% or 92.5% silver. We confirm purity with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) testing in front of you, rather than relying on the stamp alone.
  • The live spot price. Gold and silver prices move throughout the day, so your offer is calculated against the live rate at the time you sell.

Weight × purity × the live spot price gives the metal value. A buyer’s margin covers testing and handling, and the result is your offer.

Gold coins

Gold coins such as Australian Kangaroos, American Eagles and Britannias are made from investment-grade gold. Because their purity is consistent, they’re quick to test and value, and they’re paid out at close to the live gold price. See today’s payouts under GOLD (XAU) in our payout table.

Silver coins

Silver coins and rounds are valued the same way against the live silver price. Silver is worth much less per gram than gold, so weigh up your whole holding rather than single coins. You’ll find silver payouts under SILVER (XAG) in the same payout table.

Mixed lots of coins

If you have a mix of gold and silver coins, bring them all in together. Each coin is weighed and tested individually, and gold and silver are priced against their own live rates, so you’re not paid a rough average for the whole lot.

What to bring

Current government-issued photo ID is required for every sale under NSW second-hand dealer regulations. Beyond that, bring the coins as they are. Original packaging or certificates help with identification but aren’t required.

Where to sell coins in Sydney

Top Gold values gold and silver coins at our Ryde and Hurstville stores, and we regularly see sellers from Chatswood, Parramatta, Kogarah and across Sydney. If you accept our offer, you’re paid by instant bank transfer via Osko, or cash.

FAQs

Which coins do you buy?

We buy gold and silver coins, valued on their weight and metal purity against the live spot price.

Do I need to clean my coins before selling?

No. Cleaning isn’t necessary and won’t change the metal value. Bring them as they are.

Do you buy damaged or worn coins?

Yes. Gold and silver coins are valued on their metal content, so wear has little effect on the offer.

How long does a coin valuation take?

Usually around ten minutes, depending on how many coins you bring.
